Day of Immunology

DRFZ
Pupils visit the DRFZ
On Immunology Day, curious pupils visit us to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of the immune system. With exciting experiments and vivid presentations, we explain to them how the body fights pathogens and what happens when the immune system is misdirected.
We start by explaining the basics of the immune system: What are the functions of the various white blood cells? How do phagocytes and killer cells protect us from infections? And why does our immune system sometimes malfunction, for example in autoimmune diseases such as rheumatism?
After the theory, it’s off to the lab, where the students get hands-on experiments. They isolate their own DNA from saliva, stain blood cells and examine them under the microscope.
