Leibniz Graduate School for Chronic Inflammation
The promotion of young scientists is a central task of the DRFZ. In a strongly translational approach, at the interface between basic and clinical research, we train specialists in rheumatism and other chronic inflammatory diseases. Accordingly, the graduate programs are open for at both PhD- and MD students.
Within the graduate programmes, doctoral students receive comprehensive scientific and technical support. In addition, they receive training in practical courses and soft skills workshops. The aim is to identify the individual potential and to provide knowledge, skills and qualifications preparing best for a successful professional career.
Leibniz Graduate School on Chronic Inflammation
LeGCI is the graduate program of the Leibniz ScienceCampus on Chronic Inflammation and was kicked-off in autumn 2017.
Supervision
Each doctoral student completes a Supervision Agreement with at least three experiences scientists. Regular meetings with the Advisory Committee ensure an optimal professional support.
Curriculum
The additional curriculum includes seminars and lectures on immunology and chronic inflammation research, courses and workshops to improve the scientific and personal skills and activities to foster research collaborations and personal networks.

The LeGCI is associated to the ZIBI Graduate School Berlin and is a recognized graduate program of the doctoral environment of the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. The credit point system of the LeGCI follows the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).
Leibniz Graduate School for Rheumatology
Progress in modern rheumatology demands qualified specialists combining medical and scientific knowledge. The Leibniz Graduate School for Rheumatology (LGRh) is a structured doctoral program open for students from life science as well as medical students. Our aim is to educate motivated and talented students to carry out translational research in rheumatology.
Scientific program of the LGRh
Science at the DRFZ follows the concept of a “pathogenic” immunological memory, driving chronic inflammation in rheumatic diseases and being refractory to conventional therapies. By combining experimental biomedical and application-oriented clinical research, new therapies, selectively targeting this pathogenic memory, are developed.
The doctoral projects of the LGRh are subdivided into three research areas:
- Elimination of pathogenic memory plasma cells
- Elimination of pro-inflammatory memory T-lymphocytes and NK cells
- Reset of tolerance and prevention of relapse.
The projects complement each other to cover the translational aspects of research at the DRFZ. Each project is jointly supervised by experimental and clinical scientists.
Students of the LGRh obtain
- thorough, interdisciplinary knowledge on rheumatic diseases, their pathogenesis and therapeutic options
- high-level interdisciplinary graduate training
- training by both experimental and clinical scientists, promoting a translational exchange of knowledge and experience.

The LGRh is a joint program of the Humboldt-Universität Berlin, Faculty of Life Sciences, the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Division of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology and the German Rheumatism Research Centre (DRFZ) Berlin, an Institute of the Leibniz Association. It is integrated in the ZIBI Graduate School Berlin.
