Systems Rheumatology

Programme area 3
Head: Dr. Mir-Farzin Mashreghi

Programme area 3 focuses on understanding the complex cell interactions in inflammation and rheumatological diseases and uses systems biology methods and artificial intelligence to analyse these processes holistically down to the level of individual cells. In the ‘Systems Rheumatology’ department, interdisciplinary teams of scientists work together to develop customised algorithms that can elucidate the complex mechanisms of rheumatic diseases. These precise approaches are based on our deep understanding of immunological mechanisms, reinforced by the use of the latest AI technologies.
These methods enable molecular disease definition and the identification of precise biomarkers. These biomarkers should make it possible to recognise rheumatic diseases at an early stage and to accurately assess the course of the disease. As a result, therapies can be individually adapted and optimised in order to maximise the effectiveness of treatment and minimise possible side effects. Our aim is to develop targeted therapies that are precisely tailored to the specific mechanisms of rheumatic diseases in order to offer effective and personalised treatment options.
