Epidemiology and Health Services Research

Programme area 2
Head: Prof. Dr. Anja Strangfeld

In programme area 2, we focus on the health risks to rheumatism patients arising from their disease and current treatment methods. We evaluate the safety and efficacy of state-of-the-art therapies in order to identify the best treatment options for different patient groups. We also analyse the quality of care for rheumatism patients in Germany in order to identify and address gaps in care.

Our main goal is to significantly improve the care and quality of life of children and adults with rheumatism. To achieve this, we rely on extensive, long-term epidemiological studies, which we conduct in close cooperation with a nationwide network of around 500 paediatric and adult rheumatologists. Our innovative research strategy allows us to collect precise data and develop personalised, patient-centred therapeutic approaches on this basis. These approaches aim not only to alleviate symptoms, but also to sustainably improve the quality of life of those affected and make the healthcare system more efficient. In addition, the knowledge gained enables the development of prevention strategies that can help to prevent or minimise the occurrence of rheumatic diseases.
